Crawford's Golf Daily, For July 6th, 2014

Fred Meyer Challenge--- I am proud to call the state of Oregon my birthplace and my continued residence. Oregon is a small state, heck even as much as the Portland, Oregon area is growing, we still have only basketball and soccer as our major league sports.

But during the period of 1986-2002, oh did we have the major leagues in Portland every August. In 1986, professional golfer and Oregon native Peter Jacobsen along with his team of people brought us the Fred Meyer Challenge and not even arguably for many it was the state of Oregon's greatest sporting event ever and continues to be.

The two-man best ball format featured these players over the years, the greatest group of athletes ever assembled in the state. How about being able to watch,

Jack Nicklaus
Arnold Palmer
Gary Player
Ben Crenshaw
Greg Norman
Tom Kite
John Cook
John Daly
Lanny Wadkins
Payne Stewart
Paul Azinger
John Cook
Mark O'Meara
Curtis Strange

Even if you despise golf, you have to respect the fact that with so many major champions in the Fred Meyer Challenge field, it quite easily could be Oregon's greatest sporting event ever. I vote for it, number 1. How about you? Please comment in the comment section so everyone can read your great thoughts.
